Re-Certification

2 years renewal time of my certication has come. I am in the preparation to sit on the written exam, and now i choose the different track. For the cert renewal purpose, it's no matter if still use the same track or a different ones. For me, it is also a chance and a new challenge to study and master another track. The cost to sit on the written exam now $350 plus additional cost $30. Thank's God it's on my company's cost not mine :)

Well, I guess I have to wait for more time to get to Middle East, hehe. They said that my profile does't exactly match the requirement. They want an engineer that currently doing role in an intensive post sale engineering. I used to work in that role, but they said that they must consider other candidate. That's okay i said, perhaps next time i will meet such an 'really matched' offer to my current profile. My friend that work an lives in Middle East country already told me that job market in the middle east usually need 'really matched' profile to consider if the candidate comes from outside the country, and not to forget the experiences. The minimum 5 years work experiences must have for foreigner that apply the job market in the Middle East countries.

2 days a go, i got an email from one of the largest Telco company in the Middle East. This is a notification email about me that chosen as one of the short listed candidate for the job position I applied. Yesterday, i got a phone call directly from the company's HR officer that inform me the time for an interview. Tomorrow is the day, and i have a nervous feeling about this. The show must go on since this is the chance that i am looking for, not to mentioned this is a job interview from such an established and big telco company in the Middle East. So, I better be prepared and I hope things are doing great.

Standing at the intersection of career

I am in the middle of no where, standing here to decide which way to go. Actually i have a few options, and i must choose one of them. No choice will be taken until end of this year. Meanwhile,
i have to sharpen my skills and also to look at my cv (which for long time i haven't update. l.o.l). The words say: prepare your umbrella before the rain falls. So, i think i have to agree with that. Preparation and praying...those are the most important things to do for now.

Hmmm...just realized that I have an inactive blog that haven't updated for a quite long time. So many things I have in mind and so many things I have to write down, so i decide to to blog again (hopefully my job doesn't kill my time just to update my blog). Well, what first to say? It has been over a year since my resignation from my-over-10 years work-company that I used to love so much :). Since then i joined one of Cisco's partner, an established and a known System Integrator in Indonesia. But you know what, it took only 3 months to stay there and for private reason I can not tell you why it finished so soon. Obviusly the location of the company is my main consideration to resign. Now, I work in the other System Integrator (Cisco's partner also) and it has been almost a year. I learn so many things here compared to my first company (fyi I worked for 3 companies in my career until now). Well, i think it's enough said for now. It's my pleassure to update this blog frequently int the future.

Akhirnya...perjalanan ini pun sampai, setidaknya untuk terminal yang pertama. Setelah lebih dari setahun berjalan di jalur berliku yang sangat melelahkan, sampai juga akhirnya di tempat ini. Di tanah Kanguru, 2 kali aku tidak beruntung mendapatkan tiket tersebut. Rasa kecewa, lelah, frustasi sudah pasti ada. Semangat masih selalu ada, hanya amunisi yang tidak selalu tersedia. Di tanah Nippon akhirnya kesempatan itu datang. Thank's God!

Terimakasih untuk istri tercinta yang sudah terlalu sabar dicuekin lebih dari setahun gara-gara suaminya ngonsole router melulu :), terimakasih buat anak perempuan ku yang masih sayang bapaknya meski sering ditinggal untuk nge-lab. Terimakasih buat company yang sudah mau percaya dan kasih support! I love you all!!
Now... do not talk to me about Cisco stuff...i forget it for a while :)

My home Lab -> Road to CCIE

Akhirnya...home lab itu terbentuk juga, walaupun baru seadanya. Ada 4 unit Cisco 1751-V @2 serial, 1 Fa, dan 1 Eth, IOS 12.4 Advance IP. Kemudian FR Switch Cisco 2522 IOS 12.2 yang terdiri dari 10 port Serial dan 1 port Eth, lalu ada juga Acess Server/Console Server Cisco 2509 yang terdiri dari 1 port SCSI dengan kabel Octal untuk 8 terminal dan 1 Eth, IOS 12.2.
Masih banyak kekurangan nya, misalnya belum ada Switch (padahal di real Lab nanti ada 2 unit Catalyst Cisco 3550 L3...hiks) , router core kurang 2 lagi...overall covering masih sekitar 65 % dari materi. Engga papa deh, kita mulai aja dulu. Clock sudah start sejak hari Sabtu 1 April 2006...masih pendalaman tentang routing basic (biar foundation nya gak rapuh bok...hehehe). Mulai tgl 1 April 2006 'my social live' sudah tidak ada...mulai jadi 'lab rat'...until the D Day comes....God...I need your blesses...my beloved wife and daughter...pls forgive me, my friends I need your supports. Many thanks to my company for the big supports given.

Apa untungnya memiliki CCIE buat perusahaan?

Menurut pandangan awam saya sebagai pegawai, beberapa keuntungan memiliki CCIE buat perusahaan adalah:

1. Saving Maintenance Contract Fee
Untuk perusahaan komunikasi berskala besar dengan coverage almost all the nationality,
dan implementasi teknologi yang up to date, maka melibatkan perangkat CISCO adalah
suatu keharusan. Mengingat varian teknologi yang bisa di-implement,
kestabilan,dan technical support yang sudah teruji dalam waktu yang lama.
Untuk pembelian perangkat Cisco (access, distribution, maupun core) pasti melibatkan
Maintenance Contract, dimana itu akan dibayarkan dengan fee yang terpisah dari price
perangkat.
Dengan adanya CCIE employee, setidaknya Technical Maintenance sudah bisa di-handle
internally tanpa membayar Fee tambahan..it saves a lot

2. Menjadi Partner CISCO (Cisco re-seller)
Dengan memiliki CCIE, perusahaan dapat menjalin official partnership dengan Cisco.
Manfaat nya adalah rabat atau special price untuk setiap pembelian langsung perangkat
Cisco. Untuk pembelian perangkat Cisco bagi kebutuhan produksi di perusahaan,
saya memperkirakan perusahaan selama ini telah mengeluarkan jutaan dollar, bayangkan
apabila melakukan pembelian langsung ke Cisco akan mendapat diskon berapa? (sebagai
Cisco partner tentunya). It saves a lot of dollars, man....

3. Advertorial (Company Image, Promotion)
Dengan memiliki certified staff (CCIE, CCNP, etc)....dapat meningkatkan rasa percaya
Customer, Investor dan Relasi Bisnis terhadap perusahaan. Oleh karenanya juga akan
meningkatkan Kredibilitas, Reputasi dan Nilai perusahaan.

Sedangkan versi Cisco, keuntungan memiliki CCIE antara lain:

CCIE Written R/S 350-001

Menurut Cisco, apabila telah lulus ujian CCIE Witten R/S maka anda adalah 'official candidate' atau kandidat resmi untuk mengikuti final step CCIE R/S Certification track, yaitu : Lab Exam.

Ya, aku telah lulus ujian CCIE Written....finally I made it. Setelah masa persiapan sekitar 6 bulan untuk mengikuti Ujian CCIE R/S Written, hari Jumat tanggal 3 Pebruari 2006 aku menempuh ujian di Prometric Inixindo Senayan. Dengan skor mendekati batas minimal, hasilnya adalah Passed. Sebetulnya aku agak terbebani dengan kenyataan bahwa aku mesti lulus first attempt pada ujian ini. Tidak boleh tidak, karena ini adalah self-finance, kantor akan menggantinya apabila lulus...tidak jika tidak lulus...phufff...you will definetely loose US$ 300...oo, mama.

Persiapan untuk Ujian Written selama 6 bulan masih belum hilang capeknya. Sering begadang sendirian di rumah baca-baca buku Cisco, yaitu buku-buku yang direkomendasikan dalam blueprint CCIE. Prakteknya dengan coba menerapkan apa yang dibaca di real-network pelanggan dan of course...simulator

Sekarang...lagi mo ngumpulin duit buat beli router and switch bekas , buat bikin home-lab di rumah. Itu juga butuh duit engga sedikit, untuk kebutuhan sekitar 6 router dan 2 switch bekas dibutuhkan setidaknya rp 20 juta. Menurut Cisco, untuk mengikuti Lab exam setidaknya seorang candidate telah memiliki jam terbang Lab (Lab ya...bukan at work) minimal 500 jam dan work experience at least 2-5 years. CCIE Fellows di milis ccieindo malah menyarankan untuk jam terbang Lab dalam range 750-1000 jam. Kalau nge-Lab dengan memanfaatkan jam kantor kayaknya gak mungkin, pekerjaan aku di sini lumayan sibuk kecuali memang kantor mengijinkan untuk menggunakan office hour untuk nge-lab. Paling-paling di kantor cuma bisa baca-baca. Makanya bikin home lab adalah suatu keharusan, itupun dengan ambil jatah jam tidur (ngurangin family-time juga riskan). Dengan peralatan seadanya ( 6 router, 2 switch) setidaknya 80 % topik ujian tercover, itu kata para suhu CCIE di ccieindo. Apabila dengan semangat yang tetap stabil, dalam seminggu ada 5 hari dikali 3 jam sehari ...maka untuk mencapai sedikitnya 500 jam jam terbang Lab, sekitar 1 tahun adalah waktu yang dibutuhkan. Saat itu mestinya aku sudah ready.
Mengingat bahwa passing score Lab Exam adalah 80 dari 100...udah menggigil duluan neh..

Cisco bilang seorang CCIE candidate setelah lulus ujian written mesti sudah mengambil ujian Lab max 18 bulan, otherwise status kelulusan ujian written nya akan hangus atau dia mesti ikut ujian written lagi. Artinya, maksimum 18 bulan adalah waktu yang tersedia sebelum aku siap untuk Lab Exam.

Ngeri? sejujurnya: Ya...
Supaya bisa mengikuti Lab Exam, dalam hal ini aku masih mengandalkan support kantor. Engga kuat deh, kalau bayar Exam Fee sebesar US$ 1250 berikut transport dan allowance ke negara tempat ujian by your self (yang terdekat adalah Australia dan Hongkong). Mesti nabung berapa lama? Apa lagi kalau fail...menurut statistik, tinggal kelulusan kandidat CCIE pada Lab Exam adalah 2,5 kali. Artinya untuk menjadi CCIE, seorang kandidat setidaknya mencoba minimal 2 kali ujian Lab. Memang ada sih yang lulus first attempt, 2 bulan lalu 2 orang Indonesia langsung lulus pada first attempt, kalau gak salah mereka sebelumnya udah dikirim duluan sama company nya untuk ikut bootcamp CCIE R/S Lab di USA. Ditambah semangat dan disiplin belajar yang tinggi (dan tidak lupa....company supports :) ) memang tdk mustahil seseorang kandidat CCIE lulus di first attempt.

Sebetulnya aku masih beruntung, walaupun gak full kantor masih mau support. Ya udah, aku tinggal melakukan apa yang aku sanggup, selebihnya mudah-mudahan kantor sanggup support.

Oke...langkah sudah dijejakkan ke depan, tidak ada langkah mundur. With or without Company supports the show must go on....Dear God, pls give us the best!
